What Is Powder Made Of?
Every powder coating begins as a carefully engineered recipe.
While the exact formulation varies depending on the application, most powders contain several key ingredients working together to create the finished coating.
Resin
Think of resin as the backbone of the coating.
It's what forms the protective film once the powder melts and cures. Different resin systems are chosen based on the performance required for the finished product, whether that's UV resistance, chemical resistance, flexibility, or durability.
Pigments
Pigments provide the color.
From basic blacks and whites to vibrant reds, metallic finishes, textures, and clears, pigments determine how the finished part will look once cured.
Additives
Additives are the behind-the-scenes ingredients that improve how powder performs.
Depending on the application, manufacturers can include materials that improve flow, increase durability, add antimicrobial properties, create texture, or produce specialty finishes like wrinkle, hammertone, or glow-in-the-dark coatings.

Standard Colors vs. Custom Formulations
One question we hear regularly is:
"Can I get this exact color?"
The answer is almost always yes.
Powder manufacturers can develop highly customized formulations to match specific colors or performance requirements. The tradeoff is time and cost. Custom powders often require minimum order quantities, additional development, and longer lead times.
For most applications, it's worth checking a standard color library first.
Many powder manufacturers offer thousands of stocked colors, including RAL color standards, that are readily available and significantly more cost-effective than creating a custom formulation from scratch.
If a stocked color meets your customer's expectations, you'll typically save both time and money.
Proper Powder Storage Matters More Than You Think
Powder coating doesn't spoil like food, but that doesn't mean you can store it just anywhere.
The biggest enemies of powder are moisture and excessive heat.
Powder is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs moisture from the air. Once moisture gets into the powder, it begins to clump together. Instead of flowing smoothly through your powder gun, it can become difficult to fluidize, inconsistent to spray, and nearly impossible to produce a quality finish.
A simple way to remember it:
Moisture plus powder equals mud.
Heat can be just as damaging.
Storing powder near ovens or in hot production areas can prematurely affect its performance and make application far more difficult.
We've seen shops chase application problems for hours, only to discover the powder had been stored directly above a curing oven.
The solution is simple.
Store powder in a clean, dry, climate-controlled area whenever possible.
While manufacturers commonly recommend storage temperatures around 70–80°F with moderate humidity, you don't need laboratory conditions. You simply need to be smart about where the powder lives.
A few best practices include:
Keep boxes sealed when not in use.
Store powder in a cool, dry location.
Avoid storing powder near curing ovens or heat sources.
Rotate inventory using a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system.
Protect powder from excessive humidity.
Good storage habits protect your investment and eliminate one of the easiest-to-prevent causes of coating problems.
How Powder Actually Cures
One of the biggest misconceptions in powder coating is that curing is simply about reaching a specific oven temperature.
It's actually about time and temperature working together.
Every powder has a cure schedule established by the manufacturer.
For example, a powder may specify:
400°F for 10 minutes.
That doesn't necessarily mean it must be exactly 400°F for exactly 10 minutes.
Powder coatings cure along what's known as a time-temperature curve.
That means slight adjustments are often acceptable.
For example:
400°F for 10 minutes
410°F for approximately 8 minutes
390°F for approximately 12 minutes
These adjustments work because higher temperatures accelerate the chemical reaction while lower temperatures require additional time.
However, there are limits.
You can't cure powder at 1,000°F for two minutes.
You also can't bake it for hours at 100°F and expect the same result.
The coating still needs enough heat to melt, flow out, chemically crosslink, and fully cure.
Finding the proper balance between time and temperature is critical for achieving maximum durability and appearance.
